Quiapo is dubbed to be the country’s capital of ‘obstructions and eyesores’ and this will be rectified by Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada through the city government’s campaign to clean up the usually chaotic streets.

The targets of this project include “illegal vendors and undisciplined motorists and pedestrians”. The Manila Police District (MPD) has also been given an order to go after the operators of illegal terminals of jeepney, tricycles, and pedicabs as they have been causing traffic gridlocks.

Estrada has expressed that anarchy in the streets has to stop. “Hindi puwedeng papogi lang ‘to, eh. Tuloy-tuloy ‘tp, hindi lang Divisoria, ‘susunod natin Quiapo, lahat ng districts, lahat ‘yan susuyurin natin.”

The hotspots in Divisoria were initially targeted last week by the MPD and Task Force Divisoria. These hotspots include: the stretch of Recto Avenue going to Divisoria, Blumentritt, Reina Regente, Soler, Abad Santos, Antonio Rivera, Juan Luna, Narra, Plaza Ruiz, and Santa Elena.

The mayor also had the University Belt cleaned up weeks prior to the opening of classes.

Despite feeling sorry for the vendors who would be affected by the clearing operations, he said that he is always for the good of the greater number of people. The vendors, he said, are illegally occupying the spaces along the streets and ultimately causing traffic and accumulation of garbage.

Estrada also pointed out that he has given the vendors a reprieve during the Christian season when he suspended the clearing operations amid the number of shoppers.
He asserted that this has to be done, because “bringing back Manila’s old beauty and old glory entails so many sacrifices. | ASCS - FNPH
