San Miguel Corporation announced on Thursday that it will donate P1 billion to the government to build new drug rehabilitation facilities.

SMC claims this is in support of President Rodrigo Duterte’s war against drugs.

Previously, thousands of drug suspects have surrendered to the Philippine National Police, only to be sent home without due rehabilitation because of the inadequacy of facilities.

"In the fight against illegal drugs, rehabilitation is crucial to providing drug dependents a chance at restoring their lives and becoming part of the solution to a better Philippines," San Miguel president and COO Ramon Ang said in a statement.

During years 2012 to 2014, San Miguel also allotted P1 billion to build houses for typhoon Yolanda victims.
The corporation said that it has conducted talks with PNP chief Ronald dela Rosa to discuss the initiative.

In the last 8 years, San Miguel said it has diversified from its traditional food, beverage, and packaging businesses to industries key to national development. These include infrastructure, power generation, and oil refining and marketing.

According to Ang, the private sector could have a huge impact on government’s efforts.

"By supporting government in this endeavor, we are helping create an environment that will enable various sectors of our society to participate in and contribute to our country's growth," he said. MJM
