“These international writers, every network has correspondents, everyone. Not necessarily a foreigner but a resident correspondent. And they are not the subject, I was told, of several threats,” Duterte said in his speech during his visit at the Philippine National Police’s Camp Alagar in Cagayan de Oro.

“I appreciate very much of your support and maybe your – how would I say it – enthusiasm to back me up. You are correct. I am doing nothing wrong but of course, we should also not threaten people because they could no longer write the truth,” the President added.

The President made the statement after the National Union of Journalist of the Philippines (NUJP) called on the Duterte administration to end blaming the media for controversies it is facing now.

The NUJP said that journalists should not be blamed because their duty is to only “report events as faithfully as [they] can.”

“We urge the administration to end its penchant of constantly blaming the media for any controversy its words and actions give rise to,” the NUJP said in a statement released last Monday. AJRSP
